What is a wafer lock?

A wafer lock is a simple cylinder lock mechanism that uses flat, stacked wafers instead of spring-loaded pins to control the bolt, commonly found in cabinets, mailboxes, and filing drawers.

A wafer lock operates with flat, thin metal pieces called wafers stacked inside the lock cylinder, rather than the rounded pins used in pin tumbler locks. When the correct key is inserted, it pushes each wafer to the precise height needed to align with the shear line, allowing the cylinder to turn and release the bolt.

Wafer locks are most often found in low-security applications around homes and offices in Singapore. Common uses include filing cabinets, desk drawers, mail boxes, padlocks on storage units, and some older vehicle door locks. They are cheaper to manufacture than pin tumbler locks and require less complex keys, making them suitable for applications where security is not critical.

The main difference from pin tumbler locks lies in simplicity and cost, not security. Wafer locks are faster to pick or manipulate than their pin-tumbler counterparts because the flat wafers offer less resistance and complexity. For this reason, they are rarely installed on main doors or security-critical entry points. If you need advice on lock types for your specific application, residential and commercial locksmiths in Singapore can assess your security needs and recommend the right solution.
