What is a tubular lock?
A tubular lock is a radial pin-tumbler lock activated by a specialized round or hollow key with pins arranged in a circle around its shank, commonly found on vending machines, bicycle locks, and metal gates.
A tubular lock operates on a radial pin system rather than the traditional flat-key design. Its round key features multiple pins arranged concentrically around a central post, which align with springs and pins inside a cylindrical plug. When the correct key is inserted and rotated, these pins set at the shear line, allowing the plug to turn and unlock the mechanism.
The design is valued for its compact form factor and ease of manufacture at scale. This makes tubular locks standard equipment on vending machines, laundry coin locks, and bicycle u-locks across Singapore. Metal grille gates and padlocks for commercial storage often use this mechanism because it occupies minimal space while remaining reasonably secure for low-risk applications.
One practical distinction: tubular keys are harder to duplicate than standard flat keys, which provides a modest security advantage in retail and hospitality settings. However, locksmiths and security professionals know that this lock type offers moderate rather than high security, making it suitable for asset protection where damage or theft is unlikely rather than for high-value or restricted access points.
If you need to rekey, repair, or replace a tubular lock system, residential and commercial locksmiths in your area typically stock the necessary blanks and replacement cylinders.
