What is a rim lock?
A rim lock is a locking mechanism mounted on the interior surface of a door rather than recessed into the door frame, commonly fitted to gates, grilles, and secondary doors.
A rim lock sits on the inside face of a door, secured with bolts or screws directly to the surface. Unlike a mortise lock, which is built into the door itself during manufacture, a rim lock requires no modification to the door structure and can be fitted after installation. This makes it a practical choice for retrofitting older properties or doors not pre-drilled for standard locks.
Rim locks are standard on gates, metal grilles, and secondary doors across Singapore homes and commercial properties. They offer straightforward installation and replacement, which is why locksmiths frequently work with them. The mechanism operates from inside the door, with the bolt extending into the frame when locked. Many designs include a simple turn-knob or lever on the interior, with an external keyhole or button for entry from outside.
The exposed nature of a rim lock makes it visible and sometimes less refined than mortise alternatives, but this openness also means easier inspection, maintenance, and adjustment. For rental properties or temporary installations, rim locks provide flexibility without requiring permanent door alterations. When you need a lock fitted quickly to a gate or back door, a residential locksmith can typically install a rim lock in a single visit.
