What is a restricted keyway?
A restricted keyway is a patented lock profile where key blanks are controlled by the manufacturer and supplied only to authorised locksmiths, preventing unauthorised duplication.
A restricted keyway is a lock cylinder profile that is patented or proprietary to a manufacturer. Unlike standard keyways where blanks are readily available at any hardware store, restricted keyways limit the supply of compatible key blanks to authorised dealers and locksmiths only. This means a key cannot be cut without proof of ownership or authorisation from the lock owner.
Commercial offices and Management Corporations Strata Title (MCSTs) commonly use restricted keyways to control access and prevent unauthorised key copying. If a tenant, contractor, or former employee leaves a building, the lock owner can be confident that no one can simply walk into a locksmith and request a duplicate key. All new keys must go through the authorised distributor or an approved locksmith, which creates an audit trail and gives the property owner control over who has access.
Common restricted keyway systems in Singapore include high-security brands that also incorporate additional features such as anti-pick or anti-drill protection. The keyway profile itself is the first layer of control, working alongside the physical lock mechanism to secure the premises. Commercial locksmiths are trained to work with these systems and hold the necessary authorisations from manufacturers to cut and issue restricted keys, ensuring compliance with the building owner's security policy.
