What is a mortise lock?

A mortise lock is a lock mechanism where the lock body is embedded into a cavity cut into the edge of a door, typically held in place by a faceplate on the door frame side.

The lock body sits inside a mortise, a rectangular cutout made into the door edge itself. This design contrasts with surface-mounted locks that sit on the door face. The mortise lock consists of four main parts: the case (the metal box housing the mechanism), the cylinder (where you insert the key), the latch (which retracts when the handle turns), and the bolt (which extends into the frame to secure the door). A faceplate sits flush with the door edge and holds the lock in position.

In Singapore, mortise locks are standard on HDB flat main doors and many condominium main entrances. They offer both security and a clean appearance since the mechanism is hidden inside the door. The lock is typically operated by a key from outside and a handle or knob from inside. When the door closes, the latch catches automatically, while the deadbolt provides additional security when engaged with a key or thumbturn.

Because the lock is recessed, it requires precise installation during the manufacturing or renovation stage. Mortise locks come in different grades and specifications. If you need replacement, repair, or installation services, residential locksmiths in Singapore can advise on the right lock type for your door and handle the fitting.
