What is a mortise digital lock?

A mortise digital lock is a lock body recessed into the edge or thickness of a door, operated by keypad, card, or app instead of a physical key.

A mortise digital lock sits inside a cavity cut into the door's edge or side frame, rather than mounted on the door surface. The lock body is routed into the timber or metal door material, so only the electronic keypad, card reader, or handle protrudes outward. This design is standard on many residential and office doors across Singapore, particularly solid timber and engineered wooden doors that accommodate a mortise cavity.

Mortise digital locks work through electronic actuation: you enter a PIN code, present a proximity card, use a mobile app, or turn the handle after authentication. They replace or supplement traditional cylinder locks, with the locking mechanism buried inside the door rather than visible on the surface. The mortise profile suits doors between 35 mm and 50 mm thick, which covers most interior and exterior residential applications.

The main advantage is a clean, integrated appearance with no bulky exterior hardware. The lock is also harder to tamper with from outside since the mechanism is concealed. Mortise digital locks work best on doors with room for a recessed cavity and a return face for mounting the electronic components. This contrasts with rim-type digital locks, which bolt onto the door surface and suit doors that cannot be mortised (such as existing installations or reinforced security doors).

If you need a mortise digital lock installed or replaced, browse local locksmiths in the digital and smart lock category to find qualified providers in your area.
