What is a master key system?

A master key system uses a hierarchy of keys where individual keys open specific locks while a single master key opens all locks in the system, commonly used in multi-unit buildings and commercial properties.

A master key system is a security arrangement where multiple locks and keys operate in a controlled hierarchy. Each tenant, resident, or employee holds an individual key that opens only their designated lock or space. Above that, a master key opens every lock in the system, typically held by building management or owners.

In Singapore's shophouses, condos, and office buildings, master key systems solve practical access problems. A property owner can manage maintenance, emergencies, and inspections without duplicating keys for staff members. Residents get privacy within their units while management retains oversight. Office buildings use them to grant cleaners access to common areas and building engineers access to mechanical rooms, without handing out dozens of individual keys.

The system works through pin tumbler locks engineered so that the master key's cut profile aligns with every lock's internal pins, while individual keys only align with their specific lock. This prevents one tenant's key from opening another unit, but allows the master key universal access.

Master key systems require professional installation and key management discipline. Lose the master key or individual keys, and the security chain breaks. Many building owners in Singapore rely on commercial locksmiths to design, install, and maintain these systems, ensuring the right balance between shared access and unit privacy.
