What is a keyway?

A keyway is the internal shaped slot or groove cut into a lock cylinder that only accepts keys with a corresponding profile. The keyway design determines which key blanks can fit and function in that lock.

The keyway is the internal profile or slot cut into a lock cylinder. It runs the length of the cylinder and has a specific geometric shape unique to each lock manufacturer and model. Only a key blank with a matching profile can physically enter and turn within that keyway.

Different lock brands and security levels use distinct keyway patterns. A Schlage keyway looks nothing like an ASSA ABLOY keyway, for example. When a locksmith needs to cut a new key, the keyway profile determines which blank can be used. The blank must have the correct keyway cut to slide into the cylinder without jamming or binding.

Keyway design serves a dual purpose. First, it ensures mechanical fit between the key and the lock. Second, it acts as a basic security feature by preventing random keys or improper blanks from entering the cylinder. A lock with a restricted keyway profile limits how many key blanks can theoretically be modified to work in it, making unauthorized copying harder.

For locksmiths in Singapore, recognizing keyways by sight or touch helps with quick identification of lock systems. Understanding the keyway also helps when customers need duplicates or replacements. The keyway profile must match exactly, or the new key will not work. Some high-security locks use patented keyways that locksmiths can only work with under license or through authorized channels.
