What is an HDB gate lock?

An HDB gate lock is the locking mechanism fitted to the metal security grille gate of a public housing flat, distinct from and typically installed before the main door lock.

An HDB gate lock secures the metal grille gate (or gate door) installed in front of the main entrance to a Housing and Development Board flat. It is a separate locking point from the main door lock, creating a two-layer entry system common in Singapore public housing. This distinction matters because the gate lock and main door lock operate independently, and failure or loss of either key affects building security differently.

Gate locks on HDB flats typically fall into three categories. Padlocks are removable and portable, hanging from a hasp or fixed point on the gate frame. Rim locks (also called surface-mounted locks) are bolted directly to the gate and operated by a key mechanism built into the unit. Digital add-on locks are electronic keypads, card readers, or smart locks retrofitted to the existing gate mechanism, allowing keyless entry while the underlying gate still functions conventionally.

The gate lock matters in HDB maintenance and security planning because wear, breakage, or lockout situations require a different service approach than main door issues. Residents often need to arrange re-keying, replacement, or repair of gate locks separately from flat entrance work. For this reason, choosing a residential locksmith familiar with HDB gate standards ensures correct fitting and function of the security layer.
