What is an anti-bump lock?

An anti-bump lock is a cylinder mechanism designed with internal features that prevent the bump-key technique (a method of forcing pins upward using a specially cut key and a strike) from opening the lock without the correct key.

Bump-key attacks work by exploiting the vertical play between pins in a standard pin-tumbler cylinder. A specially cut key, filed to a uniform height, is inserted fully and then struck while slight rotational tension is applied, causing the pins to jump upward momentarily so the shear line clears. Anti-bump locks interrupt this attack through mechanical designs that prevent pins from reaching the bump threshold or that create additional barriers at the shear line.

Common anti-bump construction features include:

  • Pin-stacking limiters that reduce the distance pins can travel vertically
  • Serrated or stepped driver pins that catch before the shear line
  • Specially shaped plugs or bible sections that interfere with generic bump-key geometry
  • Springs or mechanical gates that must be overcome by the correct key profile

Anti-bump locks differ from anti-pick locks. An anti-pick lock resists manipulation by tools that exploit feedback from pin binding. An anti-bump lock addresses a specific attack vector and may still be vulnerable to picking by skilled operators. Many modern cylinders now combine both features for broader security.
